Arizona is located in the southwestern United States and the last of the contiguous states to join the union. It is home to the famous Grand Canyon, considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, a World Heritage Site and the 15th oldest national park of the United States. The area had a big impact on President Theodore Roosevelt who considered it a natural treasure to be preserved for future generations.
Popular among photographers, the Wave, situated in the Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness near Arizona's northern border with Utah, is a Navajo sandstone formation from the Jurassic age. Access to the Wave is limited to 20 day-use permits allocated by the Bureau of Land Management. In an effort to protect the natural beauty there are no marked trails and the track to the Wave is via navigation across the open desert.
Arizona is one of the states home to the Navajo Nation, the largest Indian reservation in the United States. Monument Valley, Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii in Navajo, meaning valley of the rocks, lies within the Navajo Nation. The area is famous as the backdrop for many movies, notably great Westerns by John Ford.
