Dunedin - NZ
The second largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, Dunedin is named for the Scottish capitol Edinburgh owing to the Scottish ancestry of many of its settlers.
The area around Dunedin provides internationally significant wildlife areas, including Lake Waihola and its surrounding wetlands. Closer to Dunedin the Otago Peninsula hosts the only mainland colony of the royal albatross (toroa), as well as yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho) and little blue penguin (korora) colonies.
Also on the outskirts of Dunedin, Tunnel Beach features a tunnel carved into the sandstone with 72 steps leading to a secluded beach. The tunnel was commissioned by John Cargill in the 1870s to give his family private access to the beach.
